who were the main characters? John Steed [represents older generation], Emma Peel [represents younger generation]

the actors? Diana Rigg , Patrick Macnee

why did this do so well in the 60s? Action, Form of escapism, Pure entertainment, Ideal England (no problems apart from the villains), Over the top, SC-FI, funny, Aired at 9.05 on Saturday for peak audiences.

The Narrative:

The Characters:

John Stead& Emma Peal

Piggy Waren, Mrs Manson, Tom Smallwood, Mr Brandon

How the episode shows the social and cultural context [mid 60s]:

Emma Peal symbolises a modern.

Stead represents an older generation.

Audience Appeal:

Action

1/2/23

The Avengers The Town Of No Return

Personal identity: the main characters john stead being formal and emma peal representing a newer generation

Information: agents how they acted

entertainment: action and humour

social interaction: talk about it

Espionage effected the episode by the tavern keeper and the two school teacher being spys

Threat of foreign invasion by showing the people blending in by being a spy for coming from a submarine example the fisherman

Cold war the uniform of the bad guys under the bunker being similar to russia

References to WW2: Steed Salutes whilst being in a an air field to remind the audience Britain won.

Humour was used when they were talking about the plans and were not phased about the enemies.

Melodrama was used when Emma peal was having a fight .

Casting & Peformance there was a woman fighting a man so it would reassure the sexist views of the 60s that if a woman can do it who cant.

Commitment to duty is never giving up linking back to the war.

Representation of the Enemy is invasion, spys and looking and dressing like Russians due to cold war.

Social contexts influenced shows in the 60s due to the threat of espionage, cold war and of foreign invasion. A show highly influenced by this was The Avengers, more specifically the episode 'The Town Of No Return,' In this episode, In the opening scene there is a fisherman shown better known as 'Saul' (who represents British fisher man stereotypes) was not startled of the weird sighting of a man  appearing out of a trash bag from the sea as if it were a daily accurance , alerting the 1960s audience he was a spy/blending in. He later appears in the episode behind the shadows of the main characters once again emphasising the fact he was indeed a spy.

Graphic match when something similar it cut to another scene with similar conotations.

The Avengers: Extract Analysis                          29/2/24

Cutting on action: cut whilst the action is still occurring from another perspective

Cut away: cuts away in the middle of the scene then goes back to original scene eg flashback

Cross cut: two different things happening at the same time in different scenes

Graphic match: Two different scene which are similar with similar connotations

Fade in/out: Fades from black or two black usually suggests time passing

Dissolve: if two different scenes it connects , if it is similar suggests passing of time

Notes

Fade in different scene

Cutting on action convo shows facial expressions of steed /fight scene increases tension and drama, increases in pace

graphic match candle flame and fire, highlights emma peal is there, combines the two scenes together

Cut away to emma peals bag to show hes lying through perception of steed

They have used Cut away in the scene when Piggy Warren and John steed are talking about the disappearance of Emma Peal, zooming in  to show we are seeing through Steeds eyes, and using the cut away to her bags behind the counter. This connotes that Piggy Warren is lying to Steed and shows the audience Steeds perspective.

Parallel sound: Sound matchs what your seeing

Contrapuntal sound; does not match

non digetic sound when peal is searching the school to emphasise intensity, church organ when vicar pulls gun in a low tone connotes death/danger, music fades when talking about imposters to emphasis what the fake pastor is saying.

Contrapuntal sound of dogs to create tension/fear as dogs barking connotes danger

Diegetic sound the pastor in the church singing of children to try and highlight he is pure

They have used Non diegetic sound in the scene of Emma peal is talking to the Fake Pastor in the church, the church organ used when the Fake Pastor pulls out the gun connotes death/danger which juxtaposes the connoataions of a pastor being holy. This has been used to create tension/ darma for the audience so they feel more engaged.

DO NOW

Represented the challenges the police face in a daily bases negatively eg getting the respect from the public - spitting on Jake

Realistic representation

Jake is represented as an anti stereotype of a gay man. For example, punching the racist guy, Jake is still incredibly masculine contrasting what  the average stereotypes of gay people are.

Felix is represented as

Male: 1,3,4,7

Female: 2,5,6

Diverse police, Racists attacking, in a council house partying in the afternoon

1. Ryan = driving seeing his kid skipping school, Jo = Affair with Vickers like wise.

2. Running after racist,
