research the artist: Raye

Background: South London ,Croydon she studied at Woodcote High School before being accepted to attend the BRIT School for two years before dropping out after she felt "confined...despite learning an extensive amount" Her mums from Gahanna and dads english

Age: 24 years old (24 October 1997)

where shes from : South London , Croydon

genre: R&B

Current songs / albums : Raye's third EP, Side Tape, would arrive in May 2018 after the release of singles "Decline" featuring Mr Eazi, and "Cigarette" with Mabel and Stefflon Don, the former being certified Platinum in the United Kingdom and peaking in the top 20 of the charts. In 2019, Raye released the singles "Love Me Again", which later received a remix from Jess Glynne, "Please Don't Touch" and two David Guetta collaborations, "Stay (Don't Go Away)" and "Make It to Heaven", the latter also featuring producer Morten. These singles were followed by the 2020 releases; "All of My Love" with Young Adz, "Tequila" with Jax Jones and Martin Solveig and "Secrets" with Regard in 2020. The latter peaking inside the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and being certified Platinum by the BPI.

Raye's first mini-album, titled Euphoric Sad Songs, was supported by the singles; "Love Me Again", "Secrets" with Regard, "Natalie Don't", "Love of Your Life" and "Regardless" with Rudimental as well as the promotional single "Please Don't Touch". The project was released on 20 November 2020.

In early 2021, "Bed" with Joel Corry and David Guetta was released. The single would peak at number three on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Raye's highest-charting single as a lead artist on the chart. The former lead single from her upcoming debut studio album, "Call On Me", was released in June 2021. Following her departure from Polydor Records, Raye released the song "I Don't Want You" with producer Riton.

Critical reception: Philip Logan of CelebMix praised the song calling the track "brooding, introspective and confessional" and adding "this is RAYE at her most frank and honest, delivering the songs relatable and conversational lyrics with delicate fragility, and blunt candour – yet still with a hint of that trademark “Rachel Agatha Keen” sass that we’ve all grown to love! As whilst there’s a genuine and tangible feeling of vulnerability that runs through the track, underneath all of the hurt, we uncover RAYE’s steely determination and willingness to forsake her own broken heart, to go into battle to try and win back the affection of her man."[3]

Mark Savage of BBC News expressed similar praises stating that the track was "a funky, modern successor to [Dolly] Parton's classic, [Jolene].[2]

BBC R1 Remit: The remit of Radio 1 is to entertain and engage a range of young listeners with a mix of contemporary music and speech. Its target audience is 15-29 year olds and it should also provide some programming for younger teenagers

How does the Live Lounge appeal to the target audience and meet the BBC remit?

what could you include? who the audience are, what appeals to them and what is the remit.

who are the audience? 15-29 year olds.

how is the audience appealed to? young presenters, young language.
a
what is the remix?

how is the remix met? Entertain- using live music from uk artists

What evidence from the show could you use to support your answer?

The live lounge appeals to the live lounge bringing on  upcoming and well know celebrities( stormzy, tom holland, becky hill ect) and they may like, having young/ relatable presenters.

An example of this is on the 10th of October they brang on a upcoming artist Self esteem.

This ensures that the live audience targets teenagers and young adults.

The Live lounge fits to the bbc remit through using young presenters, artists and showing live music which fits perfectly into the democratic of 15-29 year olds.

Exam format and questions

1. OFFCOM,BBC,They allow ads from other companys and get money that way, ?

2. Listening to radio live is an advantage for audiences because they may not have anything better to listen to so they could just turn on radio 1 as background noise, usually its younger audience who have the time.

Accessing radio content online is better for the people who want to keep up to date with the show and they could of missed it due to work ect and it allows them to re run the show, usually its the older audience who may do this.

3.The producers of radio programmes target younger and older audiences by inviting artists, guests and celebrities such as stormzy, tom holland ect. They do this to gain a bigger audience from the following of each celebrity, this targets all audiences because most celebrities have a vast range of different ages, race ect who follow them.

They also used slang such as "big up, " sick" for the younger audience to relate to as it could be one of there everyday slang they use.

The Live lounge also talk about how the living prices have gone up as a way for the young adults to relate to.

THE EXAM
The Music section of paper 2 has 5 questions
Question 1,2 & 3 could be on radio

Question 1: Farther, D, TV LICENCE

Question 2: Radio one targets their audience by bringing on artists/ celebrities  into the show, this targets them because if one of your favourite artists/ celebrities are on the show you would obviously click on it, there status gets them more views, for example Stormzy.

The live lounge entertains, educates and informs the public by talking about recent stories, the news and anything else major happening in the UK/world, they also add some live games that the viewers can participate in for rewards as some form of entertainment.

The radio one audience are active with the presenters by the radio one having games, viewers on and a way to message them, they have multiple ways to interact with them and be on the show with them.

The radio one audience can also be passive, lets say you dont want join in with the calls or anything u can listen to the other people on the call or just wait till that section is over and listen to music.

Question 3:
How does the BBC provide to wider range of content?
The BBC provides content to the age group of15-29 year olds they do this by referring to relevant topics in the modern day world, I also think they have alot of topics they can talk about when we are on about that friend group because they spend more time on internet.

Why do they do this?
They have such a vast audience age group that they might talk about "relatable" things to them, so then the audience might relate to then share with their friends to show how 'TRUE' this is. So in general they do it so they have a bigger audience.

Dirt

1. Conglomerate = own a set of companies that produces different types of media. Warner bros, BBC.

Diversification = own radio stations and magazines.

2. Explain one way that radio stations target their audiences. Use the Radio Live lounge as an example: The radio 1 live lounge invites Guests so the fans of the guest can listen to the Radio and it brings more views, for example Stormzy. He attracts a 15-29 age group.

Target for Q3: make points about how the BBC Radio provide wider content on their radio stations: give examples on Radio 1 and why they have to do this linked to remit

3. BBC Radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for several reasons

Firstly Radio 1 provides a broad range of different new music

This example is due to the remit and in particular that it states that radio should produce a broad range of new music

We can identify this in the live lounge through them playing Ariana grande, George ezra and kalvin harris

L/O: to examine the use of media languae in music videos

Mise-en-scene:

Setting

Costume

Props

Lighting

Hair nd makeup

Colour

Performance(positioning,facial expressions,body language

They used this costume because it has a solider camo colouring on it which has connotations to being brave and being a solider

In this video bruno mars has an expensive costume with his chain and robe, this shows that he is a rich, he also is in a expensive hotel showing his wealth even more.

She is bathing in diamonds, golden tap, make up looks good, see through bath

Sk8tr boi

They all look like one and other because they are stereotypes for skaters.
She plays into the 2000s punk stereotypes with her heavy eyeliner and wristbands.7

1. setting- in Asda/ club because supermarket things
2. hair and make up -
3. costume -

L/O: To examine the use of media language in music language

They are wearing masculine clothes, reflects the punk and goth style.

Avril Lavigne and her friends are dressed like Punks .
Its achieved by using Heavy make up and Studded wrists.
This could suggest to the audience that they are rebellious.

In Avril Lavigne's music video, it is set in LA.
We know this as we are shown shots of the street and street signs.
In my opinion the video is set here because its popular

THE LOSER
1. The use of the costume on the loser is done well because its so strange

2. Jason has no dress sense/ no one looks after him

3. To look like a loser

The music video of Sk8ter boi and Teenage dirtbag use setting and costume to achieve similar effects, for example they both create identities from costumes, these are used effectively because it they made abvril look like a skater and punk with her rebellious actions through out the video and with Jason briggs him being alone , sitting alone , bullied helped him look like a loser.

The camera movement in teenage dirtbag is naturalistic, for example at one point of the video it slowly and calmly pans to the loser eating lunch alone. The cinematic camera works the tone because it relates/ shows the song in a video.

THURSDAY 9TH MARCH 2023
L/O: TO EXPLORE HOW SOUND AND EDITING ARE USED TO CREATE MEANING IN MUSIC VIDEOS

SOUND:
2 types of sound/Diegetic and Non diegetic

Diegetic = Sound only the character can here
Non diegetic = Sounds only we can hear ect music

Sk8tr boi
Diegetic sounds: spray cans, helicopter
Its been included to show the realism on the crimes shes committing

Teenage dirtbag
Diegetic sounds: bully hiting bike, they included this adds realism to the bullying

Editing:
Includes: order of shots, continuity, transitions, shot duration, rhythm, special effects

Linear = presented in chronological order
Non linear = out of order no clear distinction of time or story

Pace:
Sk8ter boi: Pace of the music video matches the beat, fast pace song and editing
Teenage dirtbag: Pace of the music video matches the beat, slow tempo

Sk8ter boi has a faster tempo then Teenage dirtbag to engage the audience and has more cuts as the clips are a short duration whilst Teenage dirtbag has a slower pace to create a story of the music video, the pace of cutting is quite slow in teenage dirtbag compared to sk8tr boi maybe due to sk8tr boi being faster paced. The special effects is the dream in Teenage dirtbag.

Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each-other

One way which music videos use media language such as editing to show how each music video differ from one and other, for example, Sk8tr boi by Abril Lavigne use a quicker tempo and shorter duration of clips which fits perfectly into the rock genre she was looking for, each clip would change after each beat and to contrast, Teenage dirtbag uses a slower pace and a longer duration of clips to add some realism to the characters and create a better understanding story which is quite common for a indie genre, however compared to Sk8ter boi it is quite different, the only similar thing they have is that the clips change after each beat

4Mark question

compare how gender representation are constructed in music videos? [refer to 2 music videos that have u studied]

In sk8tr boi, Abril is made to look like as a rebellious skater. Two ways they have done this is by her actions and clothing. She started an illegal rave in the middle of a street, she also wears baggy clothes chains and dosent show much skin.

Sk8tr boi is a contrast to teenage dirtbag by playing into the normal stereotypes, of female and male. They have the classic jock, nerd and popular girl. The classic jock is seen as the dominant character who normally bullies others, The girl is always seen wearing stereotypical feminine clothes.

10 mark question

Explain how stereo types are used in music videos.
refer 2 two music video you have studied to support your answer

Serotypes are used in music videos because they are easy to recognise and identify character
In sk8tr boi they use the teenage rebel stereotype. We see teenagers doing loads of rebellious thing like gratifying walls, abseiling down walls and setting up an illegal street concrete. this shows a lack of respect for rules which fits into the teenage rebel stereotype.
In Sk8tr boi they also use Abril to contrast the common teenage girl stereotype to emphasis the fact that she's a rebellious teenager. ways they do this is by  her appearance. She's seen multiple times wearing very masculine baggy clothes (MISE-ENSCENE), Gratifying and destroying objects to create a very clear  juxtaposition of abril and the common female stereotypes.

In Teenage dirtbag they use common stereotypes of female. we see the girl wearing very feminine clothing such as dresses(Mise enscene),this is a contrast to sk8tr boi as it fits perfectly into the common stereotypes, the girl is also presented as nice and kind as she disapproves the bullies action which is a vey common stereotype of mothers.
In Teenage dirtbag they also use the common Nerd stereotype to use as a punching bag  to create jokes to entertain the viewers, they do this by showing the "nerd' in ridiculous homeless like clothing(mise enscene),showing him under signs with 'loser' on it and by also using the girl as the common popular girl crush that he would never expect to get.
